Bonnie Glaser quotes

I go around Asia, and the region is riveted: Everybody is riveted on who the hell is going to be our next president ... but the Chinese I don't think are quite as obsessed with this. They're more obsessed with themselves and the problems that they face.

The Chinese do care very much, particularly the possibility that their nine-dash line claim could be ruled inconsistent with the (United Nations) Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The fact that the Chinese are trying to rally support from every country that they can regardless of how far afield or how small, demonstrates that the Chinese do care about their reputation and image.

The Chinese see themselves as having a very large tool box to deal with Taiwan and they don't immediately need to turn to the United States and insist that the U.S. manage this problem for them.

If the Chinese really want to put pressure on Taiwan, they will use any means possible.

I'm not too sure that her friends in Asia other than Japan are likely to take risky steps that might lead to their own problems with Beijing. Right now, Taiwan only has FTAs with Singapore and New Zealand. What countries will risk Beijing's wrath by going ahead with a FTA in opposition to what the Chinese want to see? Japan might be the one country willing to do that.
