Hashim Thaci quotes
I call again, in the name of the government of Kosovo, people of Kosovo, please recognise the independence of Kosovo because it is the right decision and the right time.
I'm sure we will have success and we appreciate very much the participation of all citizens, in particular the Serbs of Kosovo. Now we're building a country of democratic standards and a multi-ethnic society with a clear vision of EU integration.
I must say that I feel good because ten years ago this place was full of Serb army, police, paramilitaries and Serb killers. But today we have the symbols of the state of Kosovo and it will remain like this forever.
The first year of Kosovo as an independent, sovereign and democratic country was a year of historic success. The decision for Kosovo to become a state brought more peace, stability, regional cooperation and European perspective. Our state now has unifying symbols relevant to all citizens; we have built a democratic environment with a multi-ethnic society.
I am not comparing the current authority in Belgrade with Slobodan Milosevic, but in relation to Kosovo they have an aggressive attitude, an attitude of violating the sovereignty of my country, and Milosevic was responsible for the same violations. He carried out genocide in Kosovo, but the current leadership in Belgrade shows its intentions every day to violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of my country.
Irrespective of the global crisis of last year, we have seen economic growth of six percent. We cannot claim that the global crisis will not have an impact in Kosovo, especially when it comes to our diaspora abroad, who invest huge amounts of their money in Kosovo. It may also have an impact on international investors, although the banking sector is quite stable.
I believe that in 2009 we will be recognised by new countries, even by our neighbour Serbia. Kosovo is ready to open an embassy in Belgrade, the way I would like to see Belgrade thinking of opening an embassy in Prishtina, so finally we will close this chapter of conflict.
Please, judge us not on past politics but on economic realities of new Kosovo, not on our previous shortcomings but on our future potential to change the lives of our people for the better.
There is definitely a sense of closure as Kosovo continues to build a state. Today, we have unanimously approved the national anthem of the republic. In the coming days, the constitution will come into effect.
My message to President Tadic is to think more for Brussels and NATO than for Kosovo. He knows personally too that Kosovo is independent, a sovereign and democratic country, and Kosovo and me personally, I am ready to co-operate with Serbia as two states for a better future for our countries and our people.
The independence of Kosovo will happen within the days to come, regardless of whether Nicolic or Tadic wins the elections. Events in Serbia do not have any effect on Kosovo. It follows its own path.
There are some procedure that we need to respect and some consultations that we need to respect too, but Kosovo is ready, is united and I think that date we will proclaim in Pristina very soon.
We'll proclaim our independence as soon as possible. Everything that we will do, we'll do through our close cooperation and coordination with our partners Washington and Brussels.
Kosovo is ready, is united. We now want to do (our) homework, and very soon we will take our decision. We hope very soon (the) international community will recognise us – Washington, Brussels, and other states.
For Kosovo's independence, we have no obstacles. It is the will of two million Kosovo Albanians. What we are waiting for is international recognition and we need to wait for this process together.
I am entirely committed to building on independence, to attract investors, for the western world to come here and improve our economy and our lives. Kosovo's representation in international bodies will come step by step.
