James Dyson quotes

Sep 16 2017 - Olympic Games

When I was told at school if I didn't work hard I would end up in a factory - well I have, and it is very valuable. Being a writer, a filmmaker, an actress, a model, even a lawyer and a banker – these are considered glamorous by the upper classes. But along the way, and particularly over last 60 to 100 years we have lost our confidence in ability to make things, to sell, to exploit globally. We seem to want to buy other people's things.feedback

Sep 16 2017 - Olympic Games

There were green and pleasant land in England and suddenly there are chimneys and smoke and women with hammers - and then Brunel wondering around looking lost. That was the last thing he ever did. He was a very purposeful, focussed man.feedback

Sep 16 2017 - Olympic Games

It was [universities and science minister] Jo Johnson who gave me the idea. For years, I have been going to every Secretary of State for Education to complain about the lack of engineers.feedback

Sep 16 2017 - Olympic Games

But creating things, for some reason, that is not seen as an interesting or an exciting thing to do. This perception is wrong.feedback

Sep 16 2017 - Olympic Games

Britain has always exploited the world, we are great internationalists, great individualists. But along the way, and particularly over last 60 to 100 years we have lost our confidence in ability to make things, to sell, to exploit globally. We seem to want to buy other people's things.feedback

Sep 16 2017 - Olympic Games

Almost every writer or film maker since Dickens has disparaged industry – this is really bad stuff. That is the luvvies' view of engineering and manufacturing.feedback

Sep 16 2017 - Olympic Games

I do not want to disparage the arts or the cultural values - but we don't half ignore and despise manufacturing. I can't think of anything that celebrates it.feedback

Sep 16 2017 - Olympic Games

It is an unfortunate, you can't ban Dickens and Blake but you could present an alternative version. Teachers have no experience of engineering and don't understand that world.feedback

Sep 14 2017 - China

You end up having to do one transitional arrangement, and then another one.feedback

Sep 13 2017

When tuition fees started I don't think anyone realised how big they would get – it ends up as £50,000 or £60,000. Can you afford to go on and do a masters or a doctorate after that? And can you ever afford to repay it? It's the worst time of life to have a debt. I thought having a mortgage was a terrible debt – but now they can't even get to the mortgage point.feedback

Sep 13 2017 - British elections 2017

Even Theresa May is attacking industrialists. It's all bad news.feedback

May 14 2017

Washing machines are tested with washing in them, cars are tested with people in them, and fridges are tested with food in them. But when it came to our request to test vacuum cleaners with dust in them, the big German block of manufacturers complained. If German companies go on dominating European legislation, that's a very good reason not to be in Europe. If they're not going to listen to us, we shouldn't be in there.feedback

May 11 2017 - Single market

It is not a single market. There are different languages, boxes, plugs, marketing and so on, different psychology, different laws. There's a lot of cost involved.feedback

Mar 27 2017

They have not held us back at all. It is clearly not a barrier to exporting into Europe. I don't believe it will get to that, it's not in Europe's interests. Europe's only 15 per cent of the global market and the really fast-expanding markets are in the Far East. I'm enormously optimistic because looking outwards to the rest of the world is very, very important because that's the fast-growing bit. I wouldn't want the government to target that area. We should make maths, science and engineering students that come to stay in this country welcome here.feedback

Mar 27 2017 - World Trade Organization

I hope that robotics means that we need a lot less human cleaners but to design and make robots you need an army of highly skilled engineers.feedback

Mar 27 2017

Considering we were not making them two years ago that's a huge turnaround.feedback

Mar 27 2017

I have no retirement plan. I'm fully committed to the business. There may be a time they kick me out but I'm very happy designing and building new products and technology. We're looking at more non-domestic products but we are not rushing to do lots of different things. We are a private company so we can do it when we are ready. It's a romantic notion and we could do it but the supply chain needs to be built back up for it to happen. When I started out in the 1970s you could go to Birmingham and find all the toolmakers and suppliers you needed but that has all vanished now.feedback

Mar 27 2017

It's like the Government does not want manufacturing – it needs to commit heavily to manufacturing.feedback
