James Murphy

Last quote by James Murphy

It's a completely new phase for the band. It used to be that the only reason I could allow myself to make LCD Soundsystem records was that I'd be DJing and frustrated that there wasn't more music that fit the needs of dancing but wasn't 'dance' music – so I made that music. But as I get older I'm more and more at home writing proper songs. There's something more classic about that, which could be worse or better. For the moment, I like this record more than I like other records I've made.feedback

As things mature – whether they be real estate, rock 'n' roll, politics, festivals, radio – there's an efficiency that develops and with it, very often, comes some soul-crushing truths. If you keep doing it, you get bigger even if the records get worse.feedback

And something about that turned my stomach. The idea of it being 'next' was just unappealing. I didn't want to be that band. I liked being the band that was relevant to me. I felt like we were about to be the band that was not relevant to me.feedback

I love rock. I love the music that was born out of the latter part of the 20th century. It means a lot to me.feedback

I spent a good amount of time with David Bowie, and I was talking about coming back and getting the band back together.feedback

I've been wrangling the fastest route between final mix and record release for the past few weeks so that there isn't such a lag, and I think it'll be soon. Six weeks is the very fastest, I think, but it will likely be longer than that.feedback

It needs to be better than anything we've done before, in my mind, because it won't have the help of being the first time. And we have to play better than we've ever played, frankly. Every show has to be better than the best show we've played before for anyone to even say, Well, that was good. I mean, not as good as they used to be. But, you know. It was good.' We know all that.feedback

If you cared a lot about our band, and you put a lot of yourself into that moment (or anything about us you chose), and you feel betrayed now, then I completely understand that. It's your right to define what you love about a band, and it's your right to decry their actions and words as you see fit, because it's you, frankly, who have done much of the work to sustain that relationship, not the band.feedback

This isn't a victory lap or anything, which wouldn't be of much interest to us. This is just the bus full of substitute teachers back from their coffee break with new music and the same weird gear … and rambling around trying to be louder than everyone else.feedback

I've been wrangling the fastest route between final mix and record release for the past few weeks so that there isn't such a lag, and I think it'll be soon, . Six weeks is the very fastest, I think, but it will likely be longer than that. There's a lot to digest for me. I've been there nearly 20 years now, and I wasn't a particularly young man when it opened, so there's that.feedback

The old guys are frightened and frightening to behold/Their heads come out fighting and still doing what they're told/ But you're waking a monster that will drive you from your orioles of gold.feedback

It's been one of the most enjoyable records to make in my life, if not the most fun ever (I think it is, for sure, the happiest I've ever been making a record). So it will be sad in some ways to see it leave the house etc. But we're really looking forward to not feeling 'late' all the time, and being able to do things like plan a weekend to do something fun.feedback

I very much like the concept of silver. My dad used to say, Having a child is a permanent silver medal,' meaning that the best you can ever do for the rest of your life is second place. Because you just made something that for your lifetime has to be first place. I'm aware that this is our second record, and I think it's better than the first.feedback

I'm not built to run. I'm built for fighting, not running away!feedback

Mar 12 2017

I'm really focused and obsessed with writing things that are specific. I don't like big rock lyrics – I find them infuriating. Rock, in general, gets away with that. It's like bad poetry. It's the 'Mystery of Rock.' People like that. I don't.feedback

I used to like when there was less music, because good things sneak through, . And now there's a lot of white noise. The first record I went to a farm and I walked away from it and I listened to the record and I thought it sounded too woody. With Sound of Silver I went to the farm again and covered the whole studio in silver fabric and tin foil so it would be more silver. Every person who plays their instrument is better at their instrument than I am. I happen to be better at being me. So I can take your instrument and play what I want better than you can.feedback

I think that not being all that overwhelmed by good reviews is a luxury. I'm like a rich person who says he doesn't care about money.feedback

['All My Friends'] is purposefully trying to chase a feeling that I got from [Joy Division's] 'Transmission'. Because it's the same thing the whole way through, and without any kind of embarrassing rockist gesture. It starts off so gentle, and becomes so fucking overwhelming. By the time he's going, Dance, dance, dance to the radio,' your head's exploding. And I wanted to see if I could make a song without people playing together. Just do it all myself by doing it in layers.feedback

Mar 12 2017

Making Sound of Silver was very emotional at times, where I just hated making that record. In the first half I wanted to kill myself.feedback

I asked to see the confirmation email he received and it clearly stated the interview time. I do not have time or patience for poor character, so I simply thanked him for his time and told him we were not interested. He thought I was joking, I was 100% serious. If you don't have the ability to show up on time for the chance to get the job, you do not have respect for mine or my management teams time and you DEFINITELY do not have respect for the opportunity!feedback

We have just witnessed something of a historical nature, because for 70 years since the war ended, the prisoners of war who worked for these Japanese companies have asked for something very simple. They asked for an apology.feedback
