I am heartbroken to once again see Louisiana families suffering in the wake of devastating tornadoes today. We are working tirelessly to ensure that every citizen affected by this storm receives the resources they need as quickly as possible.

With great respect for the role of the Louisiana legislature, we continue to believe that discrimination is not a Louisiana value and that we are best served as a state when employment decisions are based solely on an individual's qualifications and job performance.

What I was told to expect was that there would be a tremendous difference in the way I'm perceived than what would have happened after Katrina because even disaster recovery funding seems to be caught up in partisan gridlock, whereas that was never the case before. But that has not been my experience thus far.

It's incumbent upon us to have good relationships and good communication regardless of party, but it's just easier when you are in the same party. And I think that has been helpful when I've been meeting with the president but also with his Cabinet secretaries.

But it's also obviously helpful to have folks from the Louisiana congressional delegation who can work the Republican side of the aisle.

Typically, by this point in a storm, I think Red Cross would be receiving a lot more donations. I think there would be more volunteers signing up. Although we have some of that in place now, it would be very helpful if people would donate to the Red Cross, to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, and also to come in and volunteer to help people get back in their homes as quickly as possible.

We're talking about an awful lot of people, which is why we are trying to turn on the assistance as soon as possible.

Based on the information that I have obtained from law-enforcement but certainly from the footage that I have observed of the video that was made available, I have very serious concerns. The video is disturbing to say the least. And at this time I am asking for leaders in the faith based community, elected officials, and other community leaders here in Baton Rouge to work with me, to work with all of us.
