I am very very sorry and I apologise to the Syrian people that their hopes, which were very, very high that something will happen here….

It's very sad that I leave this position and leave Syria behind in such a bad state. I have absolutely no doubt that you will continue, as you have to do everything that is humanly possible.

I do not expect that we will achieve anything substantive. I am very happy that we are still talking, that the ice is breaking slowly, but it is breaking. I hope that the second session will be more structured and hopefully more productive.

There is apparently, the will to continue these discussions. Once again, we never expected any miracle, there are no miracles here. But we will continue and see.

So the discussion was about Homs within the bigger issue of securing humanitarian corridors to stop the starvation of besieged Syrians.

We never expected it to be easy and it is sure it is not going to be. But I think that the two parties understand what is at stake. The huge ambition of this process is to save Syria, no less than that. So I hope that all three parties: the government, the opposition and the United Nations will be up to the task.

We have no illusion that it's going to be easy but we are going to try very hard.

It is a huge opportunity for peace that shouldn't be wasted. This being so, we very strongly appeal to the Syrian government and the opposition not to wait for the conference, to do some confidence-building measures – diminish the violence, release prisoners and detainees of all sorts.

We hope to have one opposition delegation. This is much easier for the conference and for Syrians. But this issue will be discussed and agreed upon between the opposition itself and with us in the next few days.

There are talks between the Syrians, in cooperation with Arab nations and other countries, in order to form a delegation from the Syrian government that is acceptable to the opposition.

The only alternative is really hell or a political process.

I saw a woman speaking on one of television channels saying that she has one son in the regular army and another son in the Free Syrian Army. If it's that not a civil war, I don't know what is?

If this humble initiative is successful, we hope to use it as a building block for talks on a longer ceasefire and that ceasefire must be a part of a well-rounded political process.

We are going to talk with our brothers here in Syria – with the government, with the political parties and with civilians – regarding the Syrian situation. We have talked about the importance of de-escalating the violence.

We discussed the Syria crisis and I repeat that this is an extremely dangerous situation and it is getting worse. It is posing a threat to the Syrian people, the region and even the world as a whole.
