Think of where our forces have been sent and have been engaged over the last 40-plus years: Vietnam, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Horn of Africa, and more. In fact, the first Gulf War stands alone in over two generations of constant military engagement as a more or less traditional conventional conflict from beginning to end.

Robert Gates quotes

I think that I would subscribe to what the president-elect said yesterday in Chicago. He repeated his desire to try to get our combat forces out within 16 months, but he also said that he wanted to have a responsible draw-down and he also said that he was prepared to listen to his commanders.

Russia's more recent behaviour has been troubling as well. Within hours of the conclusion of the American election, Russian President Medevdev responded by threatening to place missiles in Kaliningrad. Hardly the welcome a new American administration deserves. Such provocative remarks are unnecessary and misguided.

I don't think anybody in the alliance is interested in eradicating crops or doing things that would involve individual farmers, but if we have the opportunity to go after drug lords and drug laboratories and try and interrupt this flow of cash to the Taliban, this seems to me like a legitimate security endeavour.

I think the key for us is, on those rare occasions when we do make a mistake, when there is an error, is to apologise quickly, to compensate the victims quickly and then carry out the investigation. That's the approach we have had in Iraq and I think we need to move to that here.

The idea was that we would go forward with the negotiations, we would complete the negotiations, we would develop the sites, build the sites but perhaps we would delay activating them until there was concrete proof of the threat from Iran.

I am quite concerned about the Armenian genocide resolution. The problem that we have is that this is clearly a very sensitive subject for one of our closest allies and an ally that is incredibly important to the United States in terms of our operations in Iraq.

I think it is important that we not let this success here in Afghanistan slip away from us and that we keep the initiative. There's no reason to sit back and let the Taliban regroup and threaten the progress that's been made.

It is my impression there are no new ideas on Iraq. The list of tactics, the list of strategies, the list of approaches is pretty much out there.
